Judy Lavern Brown was born on July 25, 1952, at the old Richland Memorial Hospital. She was the beloved daughter of the late Georgia Mae Long and the late Thomas DeSaine. At the age of six, Judy was adopted by her biological grandmother, the late Julia Jones. Judy entered eternal rest on Sunday, March 24, 2024, in Columbia, South Carolina.
Judy was educated in the public schools of Richland School District One in Columbia, SC. In her final year of high school (1970), she transferred from C.A. Johnson to Booker T. Washington High School, where she met the love of her life, Ishmael Brown. The two were united in Holy Matrimony and shared fifty-one (51) years of love and devotion to each other. Judy was employed with Richland School District One for thirty-four (34) years until she retired in 2011.
Judy spent her early years as a member of Antioch Baptist Church, but later became a member of First Calvary Baptist Church. Though recently she couldn’t attend church, her belief in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior never wavered and she remained a dedicated to her faith, and that remained with her throughout her days here on earth.
Judy had an infectious smile and heart of gold that will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Though her physical presence will no longer be with us, her spirit will live on in the hearts and lives of all of those who loved and knew her.
Though the presence of one so dear is no more, warm, and precious memories are left to be cherished by her loving and devoted husband, Ishmael Brown, Sr. of the home; sons, Ishmael, Jr. (Daqueeta), and Victor LaMar, both of Columbia, South Carolina; daughter, Juliette Janel Brown Thompson of Bronx, New York; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a host of nephews, niece, and other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will miss her, but rejoice that she is now resting with the Lord.
